On my moms pc, I notice that it freezes a lot.
When this happens, in the (blue for me) bar at the very top it says "(not responding)"
Sometimes, Mozilla will "end program" other times it will just freeze for almost a full minute and come out of it just fine.
What's up with that? It's been doing this for a long time but now it's getting much worse because it's happening more often. I updated Mozilla and it still happens.

Tue, October 16, 2007 - 9:22 AMDoes it only do this in Mozilla or but in other programs and applications too? -

Re: "(not responding)"
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 8:46 AMI tend to only use Mozilla but it doesn't happen with other programs - just on the net. It has become very annoying because it happens more often for no apparent reason. So, I don't know. It did it just now and I also had music playing - the music never stopped but when I clicked here to post - it froze.

Thu, October 18, 2007 - 9:50 AMI tend to only use Mozilla but just as I was about to respond, it froze for a minute - I also had music playing too. The music never stopped but I couldn't scroll or move anywhere for a minute until it came out of it. If I start clicking like crazy I will get the message to end program.

Re: "(not responding)"
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 12:16 AMCheck the memory usage, and how much memory her computer has (ie RAM not hard drive/disk space)
To find that out, I use the Task Manager (use CTL+ALT+DEL on XPhome - I assume she has).
Go to the performance tab.
I found the "Commit Charge" seemed to be a good indicator of how close to the edge the machine is comparing the "peak" with the "limit" values. If they're close (eg within 20% that seems to be an issue).
There maybe far better ways, and this might just be a co-incidence that makes me think what a problem is (that I had a while back).
My solution was to buy more memory.
Often Mozilla uses a lot of memory. There used to be a memory cache and a disk cache value, but it seems FireFox2 has just one cache value (see Menu Too/Options... then Advanced section/Network tab) - I assume it's disk, but it doesn't say - try lowering it. If it helps... tell us! -

Thu, October 18, 2007 - 7:11 PMIf it's only Mozilla, there may be some plug-in conflicts. Try re-installing stuff like Java, quicktime, flash.... -

Fri, October 19, 2007 - 6:49 AMThanks BryTee - I've got 512 and I keep the processes to a minimum.
"there may be some plug-in conflicts. Try re-installing stuff like Java, quicktime, flash...."
- This makes sense. I'll check into this Lee. I went through to update everything though, but maybe I missed something. -

Re: "(not responding)"
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 2:14 PMokay, I thought that a java update would do it - nope. I did a quicktime update too no go. It's still happening. I'll go for a flash update -

Re: "(not responding)"
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 10:04 AMokay I've updated everything you mentioned and I still have the big freeze up just the same. As one can imagine, it's very irritating - a freeze about every 10 minutes that lasts for a minute or so. If I keep clicking, I'll get the Mozilla need to "end program" box -

Re: "(not responding)"
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 5:29 PMI'll guess you already did a total uninstall/install of it?
I'd make sure (after the uninstall) all folders are gone, eg:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
if not delete it anyway.
Then do a good fresh install.
It could be an AddOn, so disable (or uninstall) one of them, restart FireFox, and see if it fixes it.
Then (and this will be tedious) try each, one at a time!
If it does fix it, then tell us which Addon did it - thanks!

Re: "(not responding)"
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 6:00 PMIf you aren't seeing any messages in event view or task manager. It is likely a hardware problem. Do you have a boot disk? Start it up with something and run some commands and see if it hangs. After that proves the OS is to blame then try to start in Safe mode and see how long it stays up. If it continues to fail, try running a restore point before all this started. -

Re: "(not responding)"
Tue, October 23, 2007 - 11:53 AMI've updated everything and it's still doing it pretty often - 10 times a day.
I haven't done any uninstalls - re-installs though.
Could it be my processor? We have an AMD Athlon 2500 - 1.8 / XP Home Ed. SP2. 2002 version -

Re: "(not responding)"
Mon, October 29, 2007 - 9:35 AMChopper, I briefly read through the thread and apologize if I'm repeating or beating a slow, unresponsive horse. Mozilla's fine, I think. My gut is that there's something else running in the background that your WinXP is giving a higher processor priority. If it happens, predominantly, when the browser's open, then I'd suggest shutting off any anti-virus or internet security programs (just temporarily) to see if that clears it up. The programs tend to be a little, well, intensive. Especially anti-phishing and mail scans, it seems. If you've got your e-mail open then your anti-virus runs the scan, on your ENTIRE e-mail detritus, every time your e-mail updates. It's a PitA (pain in the a**) problem that can be fixed with either tweaking, or getting a less invasive (and more efficient) anti-virus program.
Love and light, dear ones.

Re: "(not responding)"
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 10:34 AMThanks for that.
I had to go through all of the "service" processes again to put them on manual or disable.
I know this is easy but I forgot how to do it. How do I get rid of that "login" page, where at start-up or if you're not on the pc for say 15 minutes it goes to that page where you have to click the icon in order to get to your desktop again. I'm just tired of it. -

Re: "(not responding)"
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 12:53 PMYou have to go to User Accounts in the Control Panel and "Change the way users log on or off." Uncheck "Use the welcome screen" and that will disable "Fast user switching" as well (it causes problems, anyway). The other thing you'll want to do is check the setting for your screen saver (right-click on the desktop > Properties > Screen Saver tab) and make sure you don't have "On resume, password protect" checked.
Love and light, dear ones.
