trouble installing Acrobat

Trying to put the CS4 on my system and the Adobe Acrobat came up with an error. Every time I try to re-install Acrobat it says it's already there but it's not. I cannot remove the registry keys saying it's there. I've tried several registry cleaners & reg killers and I still can't remove those keys saying it's installed when it's not. Not sure what to do at this point.

Any thoughts?

Dell Dimension 4600C heatsink problem

A friend of mine has a Dell Dimension 4600C (circa 2003). One of the heatsink loops (HS2) on the motherboard spontaneously popped loose, and the PC won't boot (it displays an appropriate message that the heatsink isn't in place).

Has anyone else here experienced something similar? Any way, short of taking out the MB and soldering the 2 connection points, to reconnect the loop so that it'll both anchor the heatsink and complete the circuit to satisfy the hardware safety?

Windows Sound Recorder

Is there a sound recorder windows update or some sort? All I want to do right now is record voice - but I want a little bit better sound quality by being able to cancel out background noise, have the voice in stereo rather than mono and add a little compression to keep the sounds even and some EQ to make simple tone adjustments so it's not so bassy.

I have just downloaded "Audacity" but it's too complex to just "plug-n-play" so to speak. I'm sure it's great but I don't want to spend 6 months on a learning curve. There don't seem to have any quick start video tutorials - the text tutorials I've read don't help me much.

So, I was wondering if anybody here knew of anything that it simple? Any thoughts?

rebuild index/directory on an external usb hard drive?

pardon the drop in for emergency help, but i'm sure y'all get my type here a lot.....

i'm running winxp and i have a hard drive that i put in one of those cheap usb cases. i had it connected to a laptop when the power died on the laptop.

now, all machines i plug the drive into recognize that there is an external storage device, but there's no index/directory showing. the drive isn't being read.

error message if i try to read the drive:
E:\ is not accessible
the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

i believe all the data is still on the drive and it seems if i can just get it to re-index or rebuild the directory, i'll be ok.

does anyone have any thoughts on how i may be able to do this?

thank you in advance! there's nothing sensitive on the drive, but it does store 4+ years of my music collection!

We've got 220 members and no moderator. That means no adult supervision. As much as that sounds like a good thing, it's necessary. Especially when there are so many people abusing Tribe, lately. I.E.: advertising spammers posting links to paid sites or cross-posting links to pages containing tons of references to their products just to up their scores on search engines.

I would like to propose we elect one. Would anyone like the responsibility of moderating this "then of deves?" (It's a play on den of thieves... deviants... never mind... I'll stop now... this is me... stopping...)

All we need do is come to a consensus and then e-mail the Tribe chieftains to make the change.

What say you?!

Inserting USB plug and play drive, but computer never recognizes it

A computer I have does not recognize a drive that is plug and play, similarly to any USB memory sticks.
It does the two notes to say it saw a device plugged in, and devices that I have drivers for (eg a Zune) work when plugged in (so the USB hardware is ok).

It offers to search for drivers, but nothing is ever found.

Plugging these USB devices work wonderfully on my other computers (one an XP home, the other my job XP laptop).

I've searched the web and found others who have had the same problem but no responses ever offer a solution.
I searched for drivers for plug and play on USB, but nothing ever comes up, I assume because it's supposed to be part of the XP OS.
I assume the driver file(s) went missing for whatever reason, and it'd be nice to have them back again.

Anyone know where a USB plug and play driver for XP home SP2 can be downloaded from?

FYI: It's a Dell Dimension 4600, XP home (SP2 - and all the latest patches). Support ran out a while ago.

"The BIOS is Not Installed"!

So I did this thing and bought a kit from Geeks and put it together myself. Everything went according to plan; no obnoxious buzzing, no burnt wire smells. In fact, it seems to be running W2K just fine. I haven't put much else on it yet, because i'm still having trouble with the ethernet card.

BUT, I do notice that, whenever it starts up, there is the brief message "No drive is attached to the fasttrack controller. The BIOS is not installed." It quickly goes away and then W2K starts up.

There is no SATA drive attached to the fasttrack, true. So I figured that the two messages were unrelated, or related but inconsequential. But yesterday I finally get a reply back from Geeks tech support saying simply, "It seems that you recieved a defective kit, I have set you up for a RMA."

Wha??? No further explanation, although I've asked for more. So, WTF? How did my BIOS not get installed? Why can't I install it with tech support's help? Do I seriously have to send back my whole computer? If anyone can enlighten me to the importance of having the BIOS installed, it would help me deal with the geeks.

And could this BIOS problem be affecting my wireless ethernet card?

Controlling power outlets

I was away on an extended trip, and my firewall router decided to fail safe - all it needed was a power cycle to be corrected, but I was 5000 miles away - so I had a week of no access to email, uploading my photos, etc.

Anyway my main system is UNIX and I have no problem writing a simple monitoring script to whatever rules I feel are good for me, but what I want to do is control a power outlet (or a few) using (say) the serial port. I can send the ascii, but I'll need to build the hardware side of this, such as an RS232 interface (eg a microcontroller and some I/O drivers to switch power relays) which by sending a few choice control sequences will turn on/off the outlets as I feel fit, but am I re-inventing the wheel here?
Maybe there is a home solution to this already?

I know there are commercial products that cost in the hundreds of dollars (I'm in the USA) but I was thinking low cost, simple, home solution.

I could use the same device to control my lights or other devices from a far.

Problem one: Windows blue screen crashing on clean install with brand new computer.

This one killed me for a good nine hours. I went over everything, tested everything. Mobo brand new, CPU, new, Memory, certified and tested Corsair DDR2-800. Check everything 10 different times. Nothing. BSoD. So, I got on the MS site, and did a lot fo digging for the error codes. Turns out that regardless fo what your hardware says you can do, Windows XP will BARF huge chunks on install if you don't have all drives set for CS with the jumpers. Proper MA/SL will not work. After install, it's fine, but not during. Fixed Jumper, system rocks like you wouldn't believe.

Problem 2: System fired after updating Bios

This one for the past 6 hours had me going ballistic as only a computer can make me. I followed the proper bios updateing to the letter. Everything went fine. No errors, no problems. System restarted normally.

Got the Asus splash page and...... and...... nothing. Quietly purring. Tab - nothing. Del - nothing.

Managed to get to the post screen by hooking up a classic Keyboard (I will launch nukes at any mobo manf. that decides to start omitting the PS/2 keyboard jack) abd hold Tab while powering on. Cpu detected just fine. Ram detected just fine. Froze after that.

So, I started hacking everything apart, stripping the system. Yanked battery, reset bios with jumper. Tried booting with the CLRCMOS on because some boards will drop you into bios recovery mode. Nada. Finally I yanked all teh USB, printer, etc cords and tried again.

Perfect boot to post.

Don't know why, but that got it working.

Haven't tried rebooting with all the USB cords in, but i suspect now that the bios settings are in place, it'll be fine.

Good times.

On my moms pc, I notice that it freezes a lot.

When this happens, in the (blue for me) bar at the very top it says "(not responding)"

Sometimes, Mozilla will "end program" other times it will just freeze for almost a full minute and come out of it just fine.

What's up with that? It's been doing this for a long time but now it's getting much worse because it's happening more often. I updated Mozilla and it still happens.

Okay, so here at work I've just replaced the motherboards in two systems that came back very sick. I'm starting to suspect grounding with the ATX12V connectors from the power supply. I've seen covers on those things in some packaged systems (Dell and HP). Does anyone know what they're actually called (I've tried looking up ATX12V covers, four pin ATX covers, etc.)?

My curse is that we're using some older ISA motherboards that have too many exposed fan connections and USB adapter plugs exposed. Somethings gotta give! Or get ripped off, covered over or bent out of harms way.

Enough venting. Find my happy place... find my happy place... reboot.

Love and light, dear ones.

Hello,
I purchased a macbook not long ago, love it! But I already have a website set up on Yahoo Sitebuilider which I just found out from them is not compatible with Macs. He suggested Dreamweaver but that's sooo expensive. There is the dotMac service which has iweb. Does anyone have this? use it? or could suggest anything?
thanks,

Okay, so a few days ago, I was playing a game on my laptop and one of the buttons popped off (this has happened to me before on a different laptop and I was able to ix it after a few hours of fiddling with it). I tried to got this button back in place and sort of got it in but it was very loose. earlier today it popped off again. so, since I was home (last time I was at my dad's house) and I actually had better tools (a leatherman), I tried to fix it. At some point the tool I was using (a short dull regular screwdriver) slipped. so before I went on, I turned on the computer (just to make sure that this button, the "V" key wasn't constantly on, typing V's infinatly). Unfortunately, the laptop started to start up... than it shut down... then it tried to start up again (this time I decided to watch the screen carefully) and it asked me what mode I wanted to start it up as (safe mode, dos prompt, etc). I just pushed enter and after a few seconds of just watching a blank screen, it flickered with a blue warning screen (AKA blue screen of death) and the shut down again. It tried to start up again but I held the "off/on" button until it shut off again.

Does anyone know what I should do? Is this fixable? Is it easy to fix?

So I was looking over Outpost.Com and ran across a pretty good deal on the Viewsonic 22" Widescreen Vx2235ws Flat Panel monitor. I bought one two months back for $500 and love it. Of course these here are refurbished, but then as companys loose money each time they come in, the Refurbished items usually go through better quality control to assure they dont come back.

These refurbished ones are going for $259 each before shipping and Tax if it applies.
http://shop.outpost.com/product/5065285

The price has been going down steadily all week, though it says today is the last day for this price. Check it out if you are interested.

please pardon me if this has been posted previously.

both of my epson printers have begun to malfunction such that they print practically nothing -- if anything comes out, it's just wispy garbled lines.

in both i just replaced cartridges.

i've printed using another printer and it seems to work fine.

i've done the whole head cleaning routine.

any ideas?

also, speaking of epson, does anyone know about the inkjet printers that print onto CD and DVD-R media? my experience is that the ink smudges, even after 24 hours. the epson rep i spoke with said it depends on the media manufacturer, and also settings like print depth. seems like an awful lot of hassle. maybe inkjet printing on discs is just inherently flawed ...?

thanks!

I have an Averatec C3500. Recently the screen has started to go dark. I can barely see what is on the screen but it is very dark. This happens after about 10 seconds of normal screen function.
Clicking the mouse and hitting keys does nothing, however, if I press the button with rotates the image (this is a tablet), the screen comes back on. It does the same in other positions of rotation.
I've checked the settings and nothing I find indicates that it should be trying to 'hibernate' or save power. This happens with the machine plugged in to the charging cord.
Any ideas?

I just got the new Samsung SH-183 dual layer DVD burner. I thought it was suppose to play virtually anything I put in it. That's mostly why I got it. However, the first DVD I put in doesn't work. It's just a DVD-R (which I did purchase new in 2004 when it first came out.) It says on the box that the ODD plays this.

What can I do to fix this?

Is it worth getting a laptop fixed?

Hello,
I have this PC laptop (Dell) that i've had for years. I would say it's about 5 years old. About 2 years ago, my firewalls expired and before i could renew them, a whole bunch of spam and spyware assaulted it. I had a friend look at it and he installed some anti-spyware software on there. But that each time my computer is shut down, the next time you turn it on, those nasty programs run again overloading the memory. I was so annoyed! So then another friend of mine who's pretty savy w/ computers erased everything on it and reformatted it. he put all sorts of firewalls, anti-virus stuff on there and it worked like new. then i put iTunes on it and for the next 6 months, it began to take FOREVER to just turn on and load the desktop.
I haven't used it for months because now we have a desktop that works perfectly. I want to use my laptop again and get a wireless card so i can use it all over the place.
This is a totally long story, I know, but should i just buy a new one? or clean it out again?

thanks,
-Liz

The new gigabyte motherboards for intel claim that they are "quad core ready". This makes for an easy upgrade in the future. They have a board for the AMD, AM2 socket but they don't give the same PR marketing claim that the AMD board is "quad core ready". However, they don't say that it is NOT quad core ready either. Does anybody know the answer to this question?

Tiny 440BX bios failure?

An acquaintance has a Tiny® 440BX (circa 1999) in a standard AT tower. The owner was convinced that its powersupply had failed because it wouldn't boot. I found that it starts fine, but after it completes the memory check (NVRAM) and id's the HD and DVD-Rom, there's some fault (in the BIOS?), and the boot restarts from scratch. I'm currently running in circles to find a replacement copy or upgrade for the bios (AWARD A615601 V2.2B5) laboured by the warnings of a few that this bios was customized for Tiny. Yet, even if I find this, how could I reload the bios as the machine doesn't complete booting? This is WAY over my head to fix other than taking the HD and putting it in a diff PC.

Thanks.

This tribe - New Scope, Moderator, etc! Your thoughts here

This tribe ought to have a moderator. I nominate myself -- and the FIRST THING I would do is widen the scope of the tribe by changing its name to "Computer Hardware and Software Help" or something similar.

The reason is that it seems this is the most active general desktop computing tribe, and I would like to *encourage* people to ask their desktop computing questions here, even if they are not hardware related - which most are not.

Please reply in this thread if you agree with my idea, or if you have other ideas for the direction of this tribe. Include any thoughts you may have on who should moderate (me, you, or someone else?) Thank you!

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the card, drivers, control software and even manually deleted registry entries. Nada. The card worked two days ago, but now when I plug this Linksys WPC54G pcmcia card into an old Toshiba laptop we have here at my office all I get, in Device Manager, is "This device cannot start (Code 10)." What the??? I plugged the card into my newer Dell laptop, no problems, so it's not the card. The driver just refuses to initialize, spontaneously? Anyone know what the hell is going on? I'm supposed to send this laptop out with a maintenance crew, who are flying to Denver, this afternoon. <grrrrr>

Resources for Building a system

Hi all:

I am about to build my first barebones, and was wondering if you (as oposed to the google spider thing) had any favorite resources you care to share.

Especifically I am looking for:

1. Case/motherboard/PU Recomendations ( I am trying to build a micro ATX system) on the cheap.

2. Instructions, I mean sure I can read the manuals and what not, but it's usually nice to see somebody else putting a system together beforehand.

Thanks a bunch.

i'm looking for something affordable -- $1500 or under -- that is a pc, since i'm selling my powerbook.

i want something that can play 3d games if i need too, but not a fancy gaming machine.

something that can handle me plugging in a midi keyboard and making music would be awesome.

any suggestions on brands? or specific models?

i hardly ever buy anything so i'm totally out of the loop with whats good and new in the computer industry ;;

thanks!

New to this tribe and.......

........I just got a Seagate 750GB Pushbutton Backup External Hard Drive at Frys today for 470 with 3 year warrantee. I don't know that much about these things but my roommate is helping me out. I bought it to store all my iTunes music but apparently it will be able to hold about 375,000 songs? So my rommmate said I should just backup my entire computer harddrive which will take up about 60GB and I'll still have 690GB to play with. This thing is 7x6x3. Very compact. My friend said he's envious and now he wants one. Is this a totally kick ass piece of hardware or what? I'm not sure but I think I like it. I just figured if a 40GB iPod holds between 9 & 10 thousand songs and my computer harddrive is already full, why get a 100, 200, 400 or 500GB external. I would have got the 1000GB for $680 or the 2000GB but that costs $1,850. But I think the 750GB is a good deal for $389.99 plus $54.99 for 3 year warrantee coming to $479.10. Normally without the warrantee I think it cost 549 or 599. Anyway. I think I got a good deal? : )

Can you add parts to an iMac?

Seeing as how Apple charges an arm and a leg for simple upgrades like increased RAM, I wondered if it's possible to just add it myself. I wanted to add RAM and a bigger HD. I wasn't sure if this was possible or not on an iMac because I wasn't sure if the parts needed be a certain size or certain specifications only offered by Apple.

Does anyone know if it's possible?

Reasonably priced laptop LCD Display

Hi All,

Apologies for being a gnubee and diving in head first with a stupid question. But.... there it is.

I own a nicely refurbished Toshiba Satellite 3005-s307 but the LCD Display was damaged when dropped by Airport Security screening before a flight recently. (Thanks for that Airport Security.)

Anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions where in the local S.F. area I can find a well cared for used 14.1" TFT active matrix display? Priced reasonably. I can do the swap out.

It seems priced new to replace it will probably be between $400.00 to $500.00. Yikes! Can't see spending that on a refurbished laptop. Nice though it is.

It's running on a Intel Mobile Pentium lll 1.13GHz Processor M. The current product # for the Display is "HSD141PX11" HannStar Dispaly corp.

Any suggestions?

Disapearing Video Signal

I have two Dell Machines (Optiplex 270's) that were working jsut fine until this week. No with no rhyme or reason they sporadically stop sending a vido signal to the monitor or are possibly jsut putting it to sleep. Ive checked and recheck the Power settings and set everything to never, Ive checked both keyboard and mouse to ensure that they can wake the the mahine from sleep (they are usb devices). I tried reloading the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce cards they were using. When that didnt work i pulled said vidoe cards and put them back to onboard VGA video. Nothing seems to work.

The thing is it happens pretty randomly, some times its hours before it happens, soemtimes its minutes. Sometimes they are idle, sometimes a user will be in the middle of typing. Nothing gets the signal back short of a reboot after this occurs either. Is maddening for all involved.

Any ideas?

Is there anyway to work around this? I imagine it was built before they had higher capacity memory chips.
I have an older hard drive I found on the street by my house. I found out that HP.com does recycling on old equipment, but they charge you to do it. Seems like a jip to me...
Does anyone know of any where else I could go to do something like this?
I live in the Philadelphia area. Thanks for your help....

not a hardware question but...
So far the scan has come up with the following:

C:\WINNT\system32\qxznouii.wlw
C:\WINNT\system32\howiper.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\favset.exe

I'm not sure what to do with these, so I just quarantined these files and asking for some advice before I delete them. What are these if anyone knows?

On this HP 1020 Laser printer at my work I want it to stop printing when it detects the toner as getting low. So when I get the little pop up window saying toner is low the printer just stops printing anything else.

Does anyone know how to get it to do that?

A question for the programmers out there.

Guys, I'm a tech support rep at the company I work for. I'm trying to help develop a standalone version of one of our programs (that's normally part of the full suite install) and I'm in need of a program to help me resolve the DLL calls needed when running the program (our programmers are a little to busy to help me out).

I used to use a program, years ago, called DLL Sniffer. Of course, sniffers now refer to packet sniffing and other nefarious deeds done by malware and spyware, so I think they changed the name. Do any of you know where I can get a program (freeware, preferably) that lists the DLL calls in windows XP so that I can track these processes down?

Odd NIC issues

I came home from work today and I'm experiencing a weird problem on my desktop: I can't access internet on it, because my NIC is completely unresponsive. I have two slots for RJ45 cables, both of which come directly from my motherboard (I have no external NIC card, they are both built in). The lights aren't lighting up, and XP shows the 'network cable unplugged' error in the system tray.

I tried installing a spare (working) NIC in to my PCI slot, and it didn't work. XP detected the new hardware (which is plug and play, 10/100/100mbps Gigabit NIC... reputable brand), but I still couldn't get it to connect.

I've narrowed it down to it NOT being simply a dead NIC by trying an external one, it is NOT a BIOS setting because I cleared my CMOS and set my BIOS to default with no avail. The only thing I can think of is it being a defective motherboard that stopped sending signals to the NIC, but since XP detected the external NIC, I find that hard to believe. Any suggestions?

I have an Averatec Tablet PC C3500, running MS Win XP Pro and Mandriva Linux 2006, and the display has been acting up a bit lately. It is OK (most of the time) but every now and again, when I start it up, the startup screen (from LILO) goes into a tailspin, flipping over and over. (The display usually recovers before the generic MS Win XP Pro splash screen appears, but sometimes it doesn't causing it to be necessary to restart the machine from the power switch. Bad!) If I close the lid and open it a few times, this sometimes seems to make it go away, but then there's a kind of very light blue scintillation appearing in the very dark shadows on pictures. (It doesn't affect the highlights, just the midtones.) I am running 800x600 most of the time, but also 1024x768. However, the display problem is endemically hardware, since it also happens running a Linux O/S (which I also have on this box.)
Can anyone tell me whether this is something that can be fixed without replacing the screen at all? Any info would be gratefully received. TIA. Best, Steve C :)

Buying a Desktop to serve Hungry Database--Help?

Hi,

I have been obsessingly looking at DEALPC and other sites for over a month trying to decide on a PC Desktop. I am switching over from a lifelong with Macs because I run a small biz and need certain software that is not Mac compatible. I recently purchased Act!2006 after reading controversial reviews (speed related) and then I called Sage and spoke with their tech staff. This software is HUNGRY-- apparently it uses FQL (?)

To run it well, it requires:

min 2.5GHz, 1.5GB RAM (can get away with 1GB to start) and min 40GB HD. I want to be able to upgrade RAM if neccesary. (their publicly stated requirements are so much less!)

Sadly this rules out a portable laptop : <

I called Alienware at the recommendation of a friend, and they are quite pricey. People have been scaring me away from Dell. Should I just pop into m closest Frys and buy the pieces (I have a friend who can put it together) or do I buy pieces via DealPC's recommendations piece by piece?

I keep looking at the Dell site because they are so cheap (their refurbed stock).

Any suggestions? I just need to start my database this month.

Hello,

I recently bought the following gear and put it all together:

Intel D865PERLX motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 3.0E (HT) GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 processor
1 gig crucial ddr ram
radeon 8x agp card
seagate barracuda 250 gig SATA drive

Well, this is all that is hooked up now because the thing doesn't work so I stopped putting it together.

God knows why, the tech so far can't tell why nothing writes to the SATA drive but the drive 'appears' to format and partition just fine.

i know the Radeon is no big time card, but what other components look to be low-quality?

is Intel now too big to quality check?
is Seagate consumer low-end?
is Crucial low-end memory?

I need to find out what kind of gear works well these days and any experienced input would be appreciated.

I'm 18 years old and have grown up on computers. Tweaking, fixing, building, and all the other -ing's that go along with computing. Its come to the point where I want to step beyond it being my hobby, and hopefully making a career out of it.

I'll be attending Santa Barbara City College this coming Spring, but I have no idea what kind of courses I should be taking. Network engineering interests me, but I'm not sure how saturated that market is, or what my possible pay could be.

How neccessary is it for me to learn programming languages to survive in this field, assuming my goal is not to be a programmer? If you were starting your education today, where would you start? Any and all input would be great.

Alienware Laptop?

Hi folks,

My boss is looking for a new laptop, and has asked me to research a couple of alternatives for him. He wants speed and good graphics as it will be his new primary computer instead of his old Dull desktop workstation.

Of the things I've been researching have been the laptops Alienware makes, they have a nice new 17" screen version that's slim and has a good range of options.

Anyone have any experience with them and how they are? I'm particularly interested to know how they handle their technical support and warranty issues.

Thanks in advance.

I need to know what kind of cables those are on the smaller end. Its just an 1/8" minijack on one end, but the other end are these teeny tiny little plugs. I'm looking to buy a replacement but Sennhesier is on backorder for a few weeks... can anyone tell me what kind of connector that is, or where I can buy it?

The rubber molding is flat on one edge and sorta rounded on the other. Its not a standard minijack cord, but I'm hoping it isn't proprietary... any help?

Radio shack and circuit city A) don't have it and B) suck.

I have a D-Link router that's worked fine for a few years. Suddenly last week, my laptop started dropping the signal. It will connect to my network, but drop the connection after 5-10 minutes and connect to a neighbor. Sometimes it wont find my network at all. I called D-Link and they tell me my router is working. I called HP and they tell me my wireless card/antenna is working.

Any quesses as to whether I have a router problem v a wireless antenna problem?

A simple format and reinstall gone wrong - HELP...

The g/f's box is all f'ed up. She caught a virus, or did something and her system got screwy. I gave her a windows cd and basic instructions on how to format and reinstall. Somewhere along the way something went wrong and she tried to format directly from DOS. Obviously that didnt go anywhere, and upon a subsequent reboot NOTHING happens.

Im thinking the drive is just in need of reformatting still but since it isnt formatted at all right now nothing is happening when you boot. However, i made some floppys to boot from and it wont boot from those either. I tried pressing the delete key (despite the screen being blank) to try and get to CMOS, thinking maybe there was an issue there, like the drives needed to be reassigned or something, but that didnt work, or at least if it did i cant see it because the monitor isnt getting a signal.

Any ideas?

New cheap digital camera

This cheap Keychain digital camera I recently bought from Walgreens is turning out to be a pretty good deal. Though the resolution isn’t much (352 x 288 pixels or thereabouts), it’s still a better digital camera than the Stylecam Blink camera I bought three years ago. And it was cheaper too.

Admittedly, this camera is pretty low-grade compared to most other digital cameras. But since I’m not too picky in this area, I think the Keychain camera worked for me

Slow computers forever!

I feel compelled to scream bloody murder about what a high-level anachronism I say it is to have slow computers in the 21st century -- make that the so-called "21st century." Of course there are some who would say, "Let's replace our old-fangled machines with computers. Computers are way faster than old-fangled machines." Unfortunately, the truth may be that computers are as slow or even slower than the old-fangled machines. If that's the case, then what do we need computers for?! Let's go back to using the old-fangled machines.

The only way I'm going to stop hating computers is when they start making computers that are so inconceivaby fast that they seem to process information faster than the speed of light. "But what about those Alienware computers and whatnot?" Well, I still say ALL computers are too slow. The only way I'll be convinced that fast computers exist is if I get the chance to use one of them and thus confirm their fastness.

WinXP not recognizing newly installed RAM?

I upgraded from 2x512 MB Corsair DDR3200 to 4x512. A few issues:

*My motherboard DIMM slots are setup as A1 B1 A2 B2. The *ONLY* way I can install the RAM and not get a boot error is installing it like this:

New
Old
Old
New

The only difference between the new and the old RAM is that the old RAM has a heat spreader and the new ram doesn't. What gives?

Second question: When I boot in to windows, rightclick my computer, it comes up as "2.82 ghz, 1 gig Memory". When I check CPUZ (a sys monitoring tool) it shows all 4 gigs installed and running in dual channel mode. Is only 1 gig being used? I'm still getting shitty performance in places this rig should NOT be getting shitty performance (honestly, this rig shouldn't stutter under ANY reasonable condition).

thanks :)

After having $1500 dollars pretty much stolen by Dell (they cancelled our order and kept our money) we are looking for another computer comany. At this point we're "one bitten twice shy" so we want a bit of advice on who to go with.
It will be pretty much just a home desktop computer. We'd like to surf the net, email, word processing, spread sheets, quickbooks, CD & DVD burning, some image manipulation & video editing. I'd lke something fast in the neighborhood of $1500.
I know everyone has his/her favorites... let them be known ;)

I was given a used laptop earlier this week, and I can't seem to get it out of DOS mode. I was able to do it once after I installed some old Microsoft Word soaftware. But after restarting the laptop after that, it still won't go into GUI mode. In the process of trying to get it out of DOS, noticed that the HIMEM.SYS file may be in tyhe wrong directory. And when I tried to fix that issue, I still couldn't get GUI working. Any suggestions and stuff?

As you might have read, I'm building a new computer and have a question about RAM. On my old rig, I have a gig stick of PC2100. My new rig is using three 512 sticks of PC3200. I have a 4th slot for RAM and was wondering if I can fill it with the gig stick of PC2100, or if that would cause problems (I assume it would).

Thanks!

Can anyone here recommend a good online guide for building your own computer? I'm a relatively advanced user that has done multiple hardware upgrades and I understand the innards of a computer, but need a bit of help with the actual process of starting from scratch (mostly with motherboard cable connections). Thanks :)

Enclosure

I've got an external IDE enclosure with a 200gb Maxtor hd in it. I use it for backing up my clients' recording sessions. Recently, it began to glitch on me (not allowing me to copy/paste folders to it). I took the drive out and re-formatted it inside on of my pc. Everything was fine there. But as soon as it was back in the enclosure, no dice. The best I can seem to get out of it is that it will sometimes show up in My Computer as a local disk. But when I click on it, windows tells me that I have to format it. And when I try to do that, the format fails. I get the same result on both of my studio pc's. I've tried different jumper setting on the drive, to no avail. I defragged the drive just before I put it back in the enclosure. As far as disk usage, I still have 20% free space.
Is there a limit on drive size in XP pro as far as enclosures go?
I do have two main directories on the backup drive, one for each pc. Is that messing with my file system?
This is costing me sleep at night.

It has been shutting itself off, and the only think I can think of is that maybe it is getting too hot?? We have run antivirus programs, removed spy ware....... Has anyone else experienced this and do you know what might be causing it?

ISO to borrow, maybe buy P4

Sorry if this is an inappropiate post to this list. I just joined tribe and don't quite know where to go to post my request. Well here it is. I you can help, or point me in the direction...THANKS.

Okay, this is a long shot...

I am looking for someone with an "extra" PC, either desktop or lap top, that I can borrow for a month or two.

Here's the deal. I am working on a MAC and just started a computer class at the Santa Rosa JC. The program I am working with is AutoCAD. It only runs on PC. Hours are limited and inconvenient at the computer lab and it would be great to be able to practice at home. This is a very fast paced class and home practice would really help me learn.

I have an old PC, but is is too small and too slow to run the program. What I need to run it is a Pentium III or faster, 800 MHz or faster, 512 MB RAM, 500MB free disk space. I will be looking to BUY a P4 1 GHz or better with a gig of ram. (I would be okay with 512 ram). I am waiting for my insurance settlement before I make the purchase which should be in a month or two. So the loan could become a sale. I would be looking to spend about $700.

I can offer a massage per month of use. I live in Sebastopol
Thanks,
Deb

I’ve got a Digital Audio Workstation build around a P4 mobo. I just added three dsp cards, and now system temp and fan noise are an issue. The noise floor in my control room is getting close to unacceptable.
Is a water-cooling system for my cpu worth it if I invest less than $200. Looked at one at micro-center that was $80, but it has a heat exchanger that clipped on to the case fan. Didn’t seem like the best solution, esp. if I’m trying to get rid of noise and heat.

I need to get a replacement video card, and am in need of advice on choosing one.

I have a Pentium 4, 512 meg rambus, Windows 98. I don't do gaming, so don't need a super powerful card.

I'd like to get an inexpensive card, but don't know enough to choose from the many options out there.

Any suggestions?

Ideally, someting that would work on 98, but make the transition when I eventually go to XP.

Thank you.
A question about scanner. I have a couple of decent HP scanners but I was thinking about buying one of the mid-range Epson scanners. I scan a lot of black and white images but also quite a bit of pencil work and it's hard to find a scanner that does a great job. Any recommendations? Thanks!!

the power jack in my HP Pavilion zd700 notebook is sort of loose, which prevents it to get power from the power cord. I have to wiggle it around for it to work. I know that the problem is not the power cable.

I took it to compUSA, where I had bought it. And they told me that it needs a new motherboard and solder it. So I would have to pay over $800 to get it done (my warranty expired a month ago). Am I getting screwed? If I wiggle it for anought time for the battery to get charged I can use my computer without any problems. Why do I have to get a new motherboard?

Does anyone know a good and inexpensive place where I can take my computer to be repaired?

thanks!

Need some help here. I am at a loss as to the problem.. Installed two new video cards in my pc.. Nothing will come up on the monitor.. Thought it was the monitor so I used another one and still the same problem. Just a blank screen. The monitor shows that it is working. Again, thought it might be the video card so I tried another pc. Still the same problem. Two monitors, two video cards and two pc's.. Any idea's??
